Whole Plant Skincare FAQ

What does whole plant skincare mean?

Exactly as it sounds, this term means infusing whole plant matter (flowers, leaves, stems, and/or roots) in oil, glycerine, alcohol, or water to use in the creation of skincare products. Plant matter is slowly infused over days, weeks, and months to extract a broad spectrum of beneficial compounds that are already designed to work in synergy thanks to Nature's Intelligence. The finished product is an effective, high performing and balanced extract I will then use to make my offerings. Utilizing whole plant infusions is a superior approach to skincare.

Everything is made fragrance and essential oil free. While there is no scent directly added, you can enjoy the lovely and natural aroma from the organic butters, oils, and whole plant extracts used in my formulations.

Whole Plant Infusions vs Essential Oils

With Whole Plant Infusions, a broad range of phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and more beneficial compounds are drawn from the herb into an oil, alcohol, or glycerine extracting constituents that are already designed by Nature's Intelligence to work synergistically. This creates an effective, balanced and gentle maceration or extract ready to be used in skincare applications suitable for most skin types, depending on personal allergies and the plant matter and medium used.

The process of essential oil extraction results in highly potent concentrations of the plant's most volatile oils, termed volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These chemical compounds are usually only present in the plants in small amounts and are released into the air as a form of communication, thus creating scent. They are used by the plants as a defense mechanism to deter pests and/or to attract pollinators. The potency and concentration of these VOCs when distilled into "essential oils" allows plenty of room for improper and harmful usage. The benefits of using them are still debated and under researched, and the education of their safe use and production is largely lacking and unregulated.

Why do I not include fragrance or essential oils in my offerings?

Upon getting pregnant with my son in 2022, I developed a sensitivity to synthetic fragrances and essential oils and had to go totally fragrance free in our household. This sensitivity has continued to the present day and has been a significant change in my life to navigate. In the winter of 2023-2024, I decided I was ready to bring back my herbal skincare business that I had put on hiatus for a number of years. However, with my new fragrance intolerances I realized I would have to do things differently this time.

I have taken this on as a creative challenge and opportunity to craft my luxurious, whole plant products designed with no scent added for myself and others...whether you're sensitive to fragrances as well or just appreciative of the effective and gentle virtues of herbal skincare! I call myself a person who loves scent but can't stand fragrance and use this to inspire each product I conjure up.
